He found Andy Mac in the kitchen, staring out of the window. Peters rubbed his hair dry with a towel, his bottom half already dressed in the jeans he’d been wearing the last few days. He’d washed his one pair of underpants through and slung them over the shower cubicle to dry. Some more clothes were needed, but he wasn’t happy about a trip to his flat. Maybe he could pick some stuff up at the shops near the hospital.

‘Have you got a clean Tee I could borrow?’

Andy Mac swung round. ‘Erm, yeah, sure, hang on.’ He left the room, returning seconds later with a plain red T-shirt.

‘Thanks. I’ll try and pick up some stuff today, if I get a chance.’

Andy Mac nodded toward the mug of tea he’d made Peters.

‘Thanks.’ The urge to sniff it was overwhelming, he managed not to – just.

‘There’s biscuits if you’re hungry. Sis doesn’t have much in the larder.’ He shrugged. ‘She never did eat much.’

Now he had a vivid memory of their previous lovemaking, Peters agreed that Rosie had lost weight. The thought made him anxious and angry.

After a silent interlude, filled with brooding revenge on Peters’ part, he stood.

‘I’ll go and relieve Shepherd.’
